All the Clans in Naruto: Every Bloodline and Every Secret Technique
One distinction explains almost every clan in this series, so it’s worth understanding before any list. Kekkei genkai is a bloodline ability, something you’re either born with or you’re not, and it cannot be taught to an outsider no matter how hard they train. The Sharingan, the Byakugan, Ice Release, and Wood Release are all kekkei genkai.
Hiden techniques, by contrast, are clan secrets, deliberately taught and passed down within a family rather than inherited biologically. The Nara clan’s shadow techniques, the Yamanaka’s mind techniques, and the Akimichi’s expansion techniques all fall into this category.
Once you have that split, most of the clans below become legible on their own.
The Konoha clans
Konoha holds more named clans than any other village, and most of the ones that shape the plot are here.
| Clan | Signature ability | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Uchiha | Sharingan | A history defined by the massacre that nearly wiped the clan out |
| Hyuga | Byakugan and Gentle Fist | Split into a main house and a branch house |
| Senju | Wood Release | Hashirama’s clan, and one of Konoha’s founding families |
| Uzumaki | Fuinjutsu, or sealing | Originally from Uzushiogakure, with huge reserves and notable longevity |
| Yamanaka | Mind-transfer techniques | One third of the Ino-Shika-Cho formation |
| Nara | Shadow techniques | One third of the Ino-Shika-Cho formation |
| Akimichi | Body expansion techniques | One third of the Ino-Shika-Cho formation |
| Inuzuka | Fighting alongside ninken | Partnered with companion dogs from childhood |
| Aburame | Insect colonies | The colonies live inside their own bodies |
| Sarutobi, Shimura, Hatake | No signature bloodline | Prominent families rather than kekkei genkai clans |
Two of those entries need more than a row. The two biggest names are the Uchiha, carrying the Sharingan and a history defined by the massacre that nearly wiped the clan out, and the Hyuga, carrying the Byakugan and the Gentle Fist fighting style. The Hyuga also carry a genuinely dark piece of internal worldbuilding: a division between a main house and a branch house, with branch members marked by a cursed seal placed on them, one of the bleakest details in the entire series and worth more than a passing mention.
Senju, Hashirama’s clan, carry Wood Release and were among Konoha’s founding clans. Uzumaki, sealing specialists originally from Uzushiogakure, are known for unusually large chakra reserves and notable longevity, which explains a good deal about Naruto’s own resilience.
Then there’s the Ino-Shika-Cho trio, worth covering as a unit since they function as one: Yamanaka mind-transfer techniques, Nara shadow techniques, and Akimichi body expansion techniques, combined into a formation that’s been passed down through generations of the same three families fighting together.
Rounding out the Konoha clans are the Inuzuka, partnered with ninken companion dogs, the Aburame, who work with colonies of insects living inside their own bodies, plus the Sarutobi, Shimura, and Hatake families.
Clans from other villages
Kirigakure is unusually rich in this respect, and the rest are scattered across the map.
| Clan | Village | Ability |
|---|---|---|
| Kaguya | Kirigakure | Bone manipulation, and Kimimaro’s clan |
| Yuki | Kirigakure | Ice Release, and Haku’s clan |
| Hozuki | Kirigakure | Hydrification, and Suigetsu’s clan |
| Terumi | Kirigakure | A bloodline that traces back to the Hidden Mist |
| Kamizuru | Iwagakure | The Hidden Stone’s own insect-using clan |
| Yotsuki | Kumogakure | A Hidden Cloud family line |
| Chinoike | No fixed village | Ketsuryugan, a blood-related dojutsu |
| Fuma | No fixed village | A scattered clan with no single village allegiance |
| Otsutsuki | Not a village clan at all | The origin point the entire chakra system traces back to |
A few of those rows carry details worth stating outright. The Kaguya clan, with bone-manipulation abilities, is Kimimaro’s clan, and it’s worth stating plainly that this clan has no relation whatsoever to Kaguya Otsutsuki despite the shared name, a mix-up that happens constantly. The Yuki clan carries Ice Release and is Haku’s clan. The Hozuki clan carries a hydrification ability and includes Suigetsu. The Terumi line also traces back to Kirigakure.
Beyond that, there’s the Kamizuru of Iwagakure, the Yotsuki of Kumogakure, the Chinoike with their Ketsuryugan ability, and the Fuma clan. And above all of them sits the Otsutsuki, not a village clan at all but the origin point the entire chakra system traces back to.
A note on accuracy: any clan detail sourced from filler episodes, movies, games, or light novels rather than the main manga is labeled as such above; where a claim couldn’t be confirmed against the manga directly, it’s been left out rather than stated as fact.
Why kekkei genkai clans keep ending up targeted or nearly wiped out
There’s a pattern worth naming directly, since it shows up across nearly every kekkei genkai clan in the series: possessing a rare, powerful bloodline ability makes a clan a target rather than simply a source of strength. The Uchiha’s Sharingan makes them feared and eventually isolated within their own village. The Kaguya clan’s bone abilities get them branded as a threat and hunted down.
The Uzumaki’s sealing mastery, tied to their role in the First Great Ninja War, contributes directly to Uzushiogakure’s destruction. Rarity and power in this world function less like an unambiguous advantage and more like a standing liability, which is a running theme the series returns to again and again rather than a coincidence affecting a couple of unlucky families.
How the Ino-Shika-Cho formation actually works in practice
Briefly, why this specific three-clan combination became a standing formation rather than three families that happen to work well together informally. Yamanaka techniques disable and gather information from a target’s mind. Nara techniques restrict and immobilize a target physically. Akimichi techniques provide the raw offensive power and durability to finish a fight once an opponent is pinned down. Each clan’s specialty covers a gap the other two leave open, which is exactly why the formation has been passed down as a deliberate combat unit across multiple generations rather than staying an occasional battlefield coincidence.
Why so many clans ended up in one village
The concentration of major clans inside Konoha looks like a coincidence until you know how the village was founded.
Before the hidden villages existed, clans operated as independent mercenary forces, hired by whichever noble could pay and frequently sent to fight each other. The arrangement was profitable for their employers and ruinous for the clans, who lost children to it generation after generation.
Konoha was created specifically to end that, when Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha agreed to stop fighting and pooled their two clans under one banner. Other clans joined because the alternative was continuing to be rented out as disposable soldiers.
That origin explains the shape of the village. It is less a city that happens to contain clans than an alliance of former rivals who agreed to live in one place, which is also why clan politics keeps causing problems inside it long afterward.
Clans that were wiped out
Worth closing on, since it’s a poignant pattern once you notice it: the Uchiha, the Uzumaki, the Kaguya clan of Kirigakure, and the Senju are all reduced to nearly nothing by the time the main story takes place. Nearly every major clan whose bloodline shapes the plot has already been decimated before the story even begins, which says something real about how this world treats power that concentrates too heavily in one family.
Common questions
How many clans are there in Naruto?
Dozens across the setting, though only around fifteen carry real plot weight. The Konoha clans alone include the Uchiha, Hyuga, Senju, Uzumaki, Nara, Yamanaka, Akimichi, Inuzuka, Aburame, Sarutobi, Shimura, and Hatake.
What is the strongest clan in Naruto?
The Otsutsuki, though they are not a village clan at all but the origin point the whole chakra system traces back to. Among village clans, the Uchiha and Senju stand above the rest, which is exactly why the founding of Konoha rested on those two agreeing to stop fighting.
Why were so many clans wiped out?
Because a rare bloodline made a clan a target rather than simply making it strong. The Uchiha were feared and isolated, the Kaguya clan was hunted, and Uzushiogakure was destroyed in part because of Uzumaki sealing mastery. The pattern is deliberate on the author’s part.
What clan is Naruto from?
The Uzumaki, through his mother Kushina. The clan came from Uzushiogakure, specialised in sealing, and is known for unusually large chakra reserves and long life, which explains a good deal about Naruto’s own stamina.
