Does Naruto Get Kurama Back? Kurama Has Returned, Just Not to Naruto
Not to Naruto, no. But as of the current manga, Kurama himself isn’t entirely gone anymore, and the way he’s come back is genuinely one of the more interesting turns in the whole series.
The rule that made this possible
Tailed beasts, as the series has always established, are effectively immortal. They’re enormous masses of chakra rather than ordinary living creatures, and as long as any fragment of that chakra survives anywhere, the beast will eventually reform and reincarnate around it. Being destroyed as a physical body was never really the same as being permanently gone for one of these beings.
That rule is exactly why Baryon Mode’s threat to Kurama specifically was so severe. The technique was set up as something that would destroy him completely, with no chakra left over anywhere to reform from, which is a different and more final kind of death than what usually happens to a tailed beast.
What actually happened
Naruto believed using Baryon Mode would cost him his own life. Kurama let him believe that, and it cost Kurama’s life instead, consuming the Nine-Tails to power the technique. For a long stretch of the story afterward, that loss was treated as permanent and final, and their goodbye scene right before it happens is one of the best moments in all of Boruto: Kurama going from a prisoner Naruto once feared to a friend who chooses to leave quietly, on his own terms.
But it turns out not all of Kurama’s chakra was actually destroyed. A small fragment had existed outside of Naruto, and in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, chapter 9, that fragment reforms as a small, weakened version of the Nine-Tails, appearing to Himawari, Naruto’s daughter, rather than to Naruto himself. Exactly how that fragment of chakra ended up with Himawari hasn’t been fully explained in the story, though it’s generally believed to be connected to her blood relation to Naruto.
Is it the same Kurama?
Worth being honest about this rather than treating it as a clean happy ending: the fox that appeared to Himawari most likely isn’t simply the original Kurama picking up where he left off. When a tailed beast’s chakra gets separated and reforms from a small remaining fragment, it tends to come back as a distinct, weakened version of itself, generally without the original’s accumulated memories intact. So this is very likely Kurama in some real sense, just not the same fully-formed friend Naruto said goodbye to, at least not yet. The story hasn’t ruled out him growing back toward that over time, but it hasn’t confirmed it either.
And critically, he’s with Himawari, not with Naruto. Whatever this means for the future, Naruto himself has not gotten Kurama back, and Naruto is currently sealed away in a separate dimension besides, so even if this new, smaller Kurama does eventually grow stronger, there’s no confirmed path yet for the two of them to reunite.
Why giving the fragment to Himawari instead of Naruto is a meaningful choice
Pause on why the story chose this specific path rather than the more obvious, expected one of returning Kurama to Naruto once a fragment survived. Handing this development to Himawari rather than to Naruto keeps the loss costly rather than quietly undoing it through a convenient loophole. It also opens a real, forward-looking thread for a character who previously had far less spotlight than her brother Boruto, giving her a direct, personal connection to a piece of her father’s history that the story can build on independently of when, or whether, Naruto himself returns.
What Naruto currently has
Setting the Himawari development aside, Naruto’s own situation hasn’t changed. He retains the Six Paths Sage Mode chakra Hagoromo granted him, along with his own regular Sage Mode and naturally large chakra reserves that were always partly his own rather than entirely borrowed from Kurama.
What he still doesn’t have is Kurama Chakra Mode, the Tailed Beast Bomb, or Baryon Mode. That’s a real, significant downgrade from his Shippuden peak, and it’s worth saying plainly rather than glossing over, especially since he’s currently sealed away and unable to act on any of it regardless.
Why reforming takes as long as it does
The obvious follow-up question is why a being that cannot truly die has stayed gone for this long, and the series has answered a version of it before.
Reformation is not instant. A tailed beast rebuilt from scattered chakra has to accumulate enough of it to exist as a coherent entity again, and the historical precedent in the story is measured in years rather than chapters. Shukaku and the others have all been sealed, extracted, and eventually reconstituted over long stretches of the timeline.
That is why the fragment surfacing with Himawari reads as a beginning rather than a restoration. What appeared is small and weak by the standards of the fox that fought Isshiki, and closing that gap is not something the story can do quickly without discarding its own established rules.
What to watch for next
Given how recently this development landed in the ongoing manga, the honest thing to do is treat it as an open thread rather than a resolved one. Whether the fragment with Himawari eventually grows back into something closer to the original Kurama, whether it ever finds its way to Naruto once he’s freed from his seal, and whether Himawari’s connection to it becomes a larger part of her own arc are all unanswered questions the story has only just started raising.
